Dhafer Youssef, one of the most inspiring performers in the World Music scene, is once again gracing the Belgrade audience with two concerts at BitefArtCafe on April 11th and 12th as part of the Musicology Sessions concert series. Youssef, accompanied by his band, returns to the Serbian capital to present his latest studio album, “Streets of Minarets,” released in January 2023.

A virtuoso on the oud, Youssef stands out as one of today’s most inventive musicians. Over his two-and-a-half-decade career, he has released ten studio albums, showcasing his musical skill and the ability to create a unique fusion of genres. His impressive body of work earned him the BBC World Music Award in 2006 and the Edison Award in 2017, garnering praise from media outlets such as The Guardian, The Times, The Evening Standard, Downbeat Magazine, and Jazzwise. Additionally, he participated in the All-Star Global Concert.

“Streets of Minarets” represents a new level of experimentation, featuring impressive musicians like Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, Rakesh Chaurasia, Adriano Dos Santos, Dave Holland, Vinie Colaiute, and Ambrose Akinmusire. Youssef leverages their musicality while maintaining his unique musical identity—a bridge between East and West, traditional, Indian, Arabic, classical, and jazz music.

“This album is primarily about journeys,” emphasizes Dhafer. He embarks on journeys to the four corners of the world, searching for new sounds and using vocal techniques and effects from his upbringing. Who could imagine that the oud, an oriental lute, could adopt funk sounds? Courage is undoubtedly a hallmark of great individuals.

As part of the Musicology Sessions concert series, Dhafer Youssef will present his unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, promising an unforgettable musical experience. This concert marks the arrival of one of the most influential musicians in the World Music scene, boldly transcending boundaries and leaving the audience breathless.
